We came across this lovely blog post yesterday, excerpted here with permission of the author, Alice Rose. We love to hear that SASHA Farm has had such a meaningful impact on someone. Did connecting with the animals here or at another sanctuary help you adapt to a more compassionate lifestyle? We’d love to hear about it!

Alice Rose writes:

Animal Rights Club went on a field trip to SASHA farm, and visited with animals that had suffered at the hands of the food industry. I made the connections(..)

A key step in making the mental step in wanting to become vegan was realizing that all animals are animals, and that no animal should be subject to a knife while others are pampered in homes. Cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, fish, etc. are butchered en masse by the food industry to be eaten by, oftentimes, pet owners. Now if you were to ever ask such a pet owner if they would kill their pet to eat, I’m guessing they would oftentimes say no, of course not. So why kill other animals to eat? If they knew the animals that had been killed to end up on their nice china for supper and had the opportunity to make such a connection with them as they have to their household pet, would they be so ready to eat them? Generally, I think the answer is no. Similar territory is covered by giving money to charity. People donate to charities to support others in situations less fortunate than theirs. How often does one know the person they are donating the money to? There is still a feeling of responsibility towards caring for other humans, regardless if they know them. There is a feeling of responsibility towards our pets. I can only hope more and more people begin to feel the responsibility to all animals as they do to their pets.
