We’d like to take the opportunity over the next few days to thank some of the people and businesses in the community who make our work here at SASHA Farm possible.

This one was written by one of our weekly volunteers, Karen Grams. Karen comes to volunteer at the sanctuary each week, no matter the weather, and for several years now has been stopping at Whole Foods on her way to pick up donated produce for the animals. Before she thanks them, we’d like to thank her. Thanks, Karen, for everything you do here and for caring as much about these animals as we do.

Wouldn’t you love to know that at least once a week, like clockwork, you would eat a delicious organic salad of romaine lettuce, spinach, dandelion greens, arugula, bok choy, chard, kale, mustard greens, beets…the list is almost endless. Well, our lucky residents get these awesome greens weekly thanks to our friends at Whole Foods Market.

Sometimes we also get a variety of fruits, the favorite being grapes which are not only a hit with the roosters and chickens (who also love lettuce, by the way), but the pigs, too. I wish you could see the expression of joy on Wilbur’s face as I drop bunches of them into his huge, yet gentle mouth. I swear he’s smiling. It’s fun to see a cow down an entire head of cauliflower in one bite. And did you know that horses and donkeys like celery? Of course, they prefer apples and carrots, but the sugar in them can actually be quite harmful if they get too much, causing a variety of illnesses. Too much sugar can cause them to founder (a painful condition of the foot) or they can become insulin resistant, among other things.

All these delicacies are given to us absolutely free, so please support Whole Foods Market by shopping there as often as you can. They really give back to the community by donating not just to us, but to lots of other non-profit organizations as well. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I think this is an excellent time to give thanks, from the animals of SASHA Farm, to Whole Foods Market of Ann Arbor!
