New cows, new cow shelter!

A few weeks ago, we were asked to take two Holstein steers and one Holstein mix steer that had been raised together since their rescue a few years ago. They were originally veal calves, and had come to live in Michigan by way of Farm Sanctuary. The people that raised them, supporters of SASHA Farm, now needed to downsize a bit, and they asked if Sammy, Arnold and Puppy could come and live here. We were happy to take them, but were concerned that there be enough shelter for all the cows through the winter, so they generously helped put up a brand new shelter. Not only is there enough space for all the cows, but the older red girls (Pretty and Lash) who always avoided the fully-enclosed barn have found that they are more comfortable in the new three-sided shelter.

Sammy, Arnold and Puppy are a joy to have around. Arnold and Sammy are both enormous boys! Thankfully, they’re both exceptionally friendly. Sammy will even give kisses on the cheek. (If you request one, be prepared to get wet!) Puppy is much shorter, but very round. He has aspirations of herd leadership, and so instead of spending his time entertaining the humans, he’s constantly schmoozing the bovine ladies. We were a little worried that Digger, the longhorn steer, would give them a hard time, but he took to the new boys right away.

Puppy gets up close and personal with Pam, the photographer.

Come and meet the new boys if you haven’t already! Better yet, sponsor them! There are dozen cows in the pasture now, and they’re burning through hay!
