Goodbye, Zevon.
We suffered another sad dog loss, this time the day before Thanksgiving.
Zevon, best know as half of “Miles-and-Zevon,” came to live at SASHA Farm in the wake of the Katrina disaster. The two were stranded on a rooftop in New Orleans together, and after their rescue, they were inseparable. In fact, while Miles was interested in all the activities of the people and other animals on the farm, Zevon was clearly interested mostly in Miles. He’d accept an occasional scratch behind the ears or a treat, but rarely sought out our attention. I liked to tell people that Zevon didn’t belong to the farm; he belonged to Miles.
He’d had a bout of pancreatitis in mid-August, but after a quick recovery, he spent the next few weeks of autumn racing around the farm with his best friend. He began to decline again, though, and after he turned down his favorite foods, we took him back to the vet where he was diagnosed with a sizable tumor in his abdomen. The prognosis was grim and he was clearly in a great deal of pain, so we made the most humane decision we could for him.
Everyone has asked how Miles is taking the loss of his best friend, and honestly, I think he knew how ill Zevon was before we did. We all noticed him spending less time with his friend in the days before his death. It’s almost as if he’s already come to terms with the loss, said his goodbyes and moved on. Still, he could use an extra scratch next time you see him.

Wow, another sad bit of news. Zevon was lucky to have such a good friend in Miles. Their friendship was an inspiration to me. I am so sad now, but thankful that I have my buddy Rex (AKA Riker) to hug. Zevon was another lucky dog able to spend the end of his life at Sasha.

Zevon was such a cool dog. He wan’t the most lovey-dovey of the bunch, but seeing him bop around the farm always made me smile.
Carol, you have Riker?! Lucky you! He was one of my absolute Katrina dogs, so much energy! How is he?

Amanda,
You hit the nail on the head with Zevon’s personality. I had a soft spot in my heart for him because he was such a shy guy that kept to himself. It makes me happy to think of the bond he had with Miles.
