Bella’s back! Help!
For those who don’t remember or haven’t had the pleasure of meeting her, Bella is a joyful middle-aged medium-sized spitz mix who came to us by way of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. She was one of the first to arrive and the last of the adoptables to leave. Well, that’s not entirely true. She actually left and has been returned three times, and the last time was this past February. And now she’s back. Again.
We really thought this family was the one for her. Their son adored her, but his sister developed allergies and Bella had to come back to SASHA Farm yesterday.
Bella isn’t an easy dog. She’s full of happy energy. She doesn’t come when she’s called. She digs. And digs and digs and digs. She doesn’t like cats, and she has to be separated from other dogs at feeding time. Who knows what she went through during Katrina and even in her life prior to that? Who can blame her for not wanting to share? She also chases chickens.
Bella doesn’t do well here at the sanctuary. She can’t run with the rest of the pack because she watches the gates and darts out when they’re open. It’s just not possible to run a sanctuary without leaving a gate open once in awhile, so she has to be confined. Because she digs out of the kennels, she has to be on a cable, but she’s also a better escape artist than Houdini ever dreamed of being and wiggles out of her halters occasionally. For a high energy dog like Bella, being constantly confined is torture. She lives for the days that we have enough help here to take her for long walks, and in the winter, those days don’t happen often enough.
Bella needs to go to a real forever home, but we know from past experience that that takes time. In the meantime, we desperately need to find her a foster home. She does well with other dogs except at feeding time. She’d love a male companion or a more submissive female. She’s a loyal dog, a joy to be around when she’s getting her needs met. If her three-time loser status scares you and you don’t want to commit to forever, just take her for a few days or weeks and try her out.
Please pass her information on to anyone you know who might be a good fit for her. She’s just not a farm dog. She’s not a dog you can toss in the backyard and forget about for hours at a time. She needs walks or runs or hikes, one-on-one time, obedience training. She needs to be part of a family. Help?!
