Sooo…Precious?!
Back in February, we got an adorable new arrival. It was a baby chick who luckily had some very good friends who drove him from the Chicago area to save his life. You see, this baby was born in a research lab. They were using eggs in their study, and those eggs weren’t supposed to hatch. Oops! A couple of students searched for a home for the little chick, but no one wants little chicks in the winter. There was talk of the researcher killing the chick to study his gizzard. Luckily, they finally found SASHA Farm, and we happily took him in.
He arrived in a ten gallon aquarium on which someone had written, “Hi! My name is Precious!” Awwww! Precious was a sweet little chick, and before long, it was clear he was going to be a rooster. Still, I couldn’t resist the idea of a big tough rooster named Precious. He’d sit on my arm and let me scratch his head. Once he learned to crow, he’d do it on command for his favorite treat, a grape. (This would prove a bad idea later.)
Of course, time has a way of changing sweet little roosters, and Precious was no exception. Those of you who have met little Precious in the last couple of months know that ‘precious’ isn’t exactly a good description for his feisty personality anymore. (By the way, he’s asked me to apologize to those of you he’s flogged lately.) Turns out, his breed of rooster is known for being rather…assertive. Oh , and the cute crowing on command? He learned to crow pretty much anytime anyone walked into the barn, and he has a voice that rivals police sirens.
Precious now lives in the former rooster barn with a few hens. (Turns out, he wasn’t very popular with the other roosters. All ego and not much to back it up yet, poor guy.) He’s grown into a handsome young chicken, and even though he’d rather chase me than sit on my arm, he’ll always be Precious.
